MOCA Toronto Appoints Michael Bertrand as Board Chair

TORONTO, JUNE 25, 2024 – The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto (MOCA) announces the appointment of Michael Bertrand as the museum’s Board Chair. Bertrand was first appointed to the board of MOCA as Director in 2022 and will start in his new role as Chair on June 25, 2024.

Bertrand brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the Canadian arts community to his new role as Board Chair. A lawyer by profession, Bertrand has been a partner in the Banking and Finance Group at Goodmans LLP in Toronto since 2007. An esteemed member of the legal community, he has been lauded by prestigious legal publications including Chambers Global, Chambers Canada, Best Lawyers in Canada, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, and IFLR 1000.

In addition to his legal career, Bertrand is a passionate collector of contemporary art, with a renowned portfolio that includes works by some of today’s most celebrated painters. His dedication to supporting the arts extends beyond his personal collection, generously donating significant artworks to institutions such as the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada. Bertrand is also known for lending his artworks to major international exhibitions, including shows at public institutions in Canada, the US, the UK, Belgium and Norway, among other places, further enriching cultural dialogue on a global scale.

“We are thrilled by the appointment of Michael Bertrand to the role of museum Board Chair,” said Kathleen Bartels, Executive Director of MOCA. “His extensive experience in the art world and wider community, combined with his longstanding commitment to our institution as a Board Director since 2022, uniquely positions him to lead MOCA through its next phase of growth and impact.”

Prior to joining MOCA’s board, Bertrand served on the Modern and Contemporary Curatorial Committee at the Art Gallery of Ontario from 2017 to 2022, where his insights and contributions played a pivotal role in shaping the institution’s contemporary art initiatives.

As Board Chair, Bertrand will continue to champion MOCA’s mission to engage audiences with contemporary art and foster creative innovation within Toronto’s cultural landscape.
