Bojagi Sewing Workshop with Laura Henneberry

Join artist Laura Henneberry for a hands-on sewing workshop and create your own bojagi! 

Drawing inspiration from exhibiting artist Kimsooja’s exhibition Dimensions of a Needle, featuring both suspended traditional Korean bedcovers and bottari, you’re invited to create your own bojagi (Korean wrapping cloth) in order to wrap a precious object into a bottari. 

Bottari is a traditional Korean method of wrapping items and a recurring motif in Kimsooja’s practice. These fabric bundles, often made with patchwork designs similar to quilting, were created by women across all social and economic backgrounds, and used to store objects, wrap clothing, send gifts, and transport belongings during moves. 

For this workshop, bring a small object of sentimental value—no larger than a shoebox. By the end, this item will be wrapped in its own bojagi, and you’ll have your very own bottari to take home with you.

Henneberry will guide you through the process of sewing layers of colourful cotton, tulle, and unbleached muslin, with vibrant threads to create a custom pattern, then lead you through different ways to wrap and tie bojagi around your object.

Registration required. Ticket includes general admission. All bojagi materials are provided, but please bring your own sentimental item.
