On Sunday, October 4, join artist Bharti Kher for a tour of her exhibition Bones. In dialogue with MOCA’s Artistic Director, Rui Mateus Amaral, Kher will offer an in-depth look at her spellbinding new project, sharing insight into her creative process and the conceptual and material choices that shaped this extraordinary exhibition.
Kher’s practice is one of transformation, breaking objects apart and reconstituting them anew, embracing the impossibility of returning them to what they once were.
Bones brings together work by Bharti Kher from the past 15 years with new sculptures. Surreal female figures—draped in resin-dipped saris or entwined with spiralling forms—combine with her geometric sculptures, activating and complicating one another. Mirrored surfaces densely covered with bindis sweep and swirl into forms reminiscent of microscopic life or celestial visions. Throughout, forms tilt, hover, recalibrate, gather and disperse, creating a universe of tension in which opposites coexist and everything is in flux. Bones attempts to balance instability and control, creating a tension where nothing settles and transformation is endless.

About the Artist
Bharti Kher (b.1969, London, UK) has lived in New Delhi, India, since 1993. She studied painting, graduating in 1991 from Newcastle Polytechnic. In 1992 she travelled to India, deciding to live there permanently.
At the center of Kher’s practice are her sculptures, early examples of which featured fantastical hybrid characters, blurring the distinctions between humans and nature, ecology and politics. In line with this early practice, Kher continues to assemble, juxtapose and transform found objects that are witness to their own histories.
Kher’s work is currently the subject of a solo display at the V&A Museum (London, England), following a series of recent solo exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (West Yorkshire, England), Thorvaldsens Museum (Copenhagen, Denmark), Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin, Ireland), and the Hayward Gallery (London, UK). Her work is held in the collections of major international institutions including The British Museum (London, UK), Guggenheim, (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates), National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi, India), National Museum of Canada (Ottawa, Canada), Rockbund Museum (Shanghai, China), and the Vancouver Art Gallery (Vancouver, Canada).
