Free Friday Night: Plant-tastic!

Friday, May 5

This Friday the theme is: Plant-tastic!

Workshop with Jaylen Bastos

Saturday, May 6

What do seeds and hair have in common? Could you find your way home using nothing but the trees? Well, hold on to your garden hoses! Join artist, ecologist and animal behaviourist, Jaylen Bastos for an educational workshop and arts activity that explores local plant life and the ways plants are used in different cultures.

In this workshop, participants will learn about how plants are used for a variety of purposes and uncover the botanical legacy of Black and Latinx communities, with a focus on communities of the Caribbean and South America, to gain a better understanding of our shared and individual connections to the natural world.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the plant life local to Toronto and MOCA’s surrounding areas including The West Toronto Rail Path and High Park. This workshop relates to the themes shown throughout Kapwani Kiwanga’s Remediation, which explores the many histories and uses of botany.

Registration is recommended for this workshop as there is limited capacity

May TD Community Sunday

Sunday, May 7

Building on Jaylen Bastos’ engagement with Kapwani Kiwanga’s work on Saturday, MOCA’s Arts Educators will be leading an all-ages arts activity inspired by the plants and forms present in Remediation. During this session participants will learn how to make their own terrariums as well as create miniature sculptures and additions for them. Through this process participants will also learn about the history of the terrarium and their relation to Kiwanga’s Vivarium sculptures.
