April: Parents are a Drag!
Free Friday Night: Dress Like Your Parents
Friday, March 31
To kickstart the weekend, you’re invited to dress up in a fun outfit inspired by the MOCA Family Weekend Theme. Join in by wearing a full “costume” or by wearing one item that represents the theme.
This Friday the theme is: Dress Like Your Parents.
Workshop with The Drag Academy
Saturday, April 1
Inspired by the work of Athena Papadopoulos, who creates sculptural works that play on stereotypical feminine signs and materials and offer commentary on the process of self-augmentation — of “dolling” and “dragging” oneself up, this week’s workshop is led by The Drag Academy. Featuring storytime with drag artist Barbie Jo Bontemps, a drag sing-a-long and the opportunity to get silly and dress up your art piece with body mapping, this workshop will show us that it’s never too early (or too late!) to get silly, dress-up and have fun with gender! Kids will trace their images on brown craft paper and then use unconventional materials like clothing, cushions, plush toys, wigs and textiles to decorate the tracing.
Registration is recommended for this workshop as there is limited capacity.
April TD Community Sunday
Sunday, April 2
Join MOCA’s Arts Educators for a playful accessory making workshop that takes inspiration from Athena Papadopoulos’s The New Alphabet. This all-ages workshop will focus on creating button, pin and broach sculptures that can be used as wearables–it could be a patch, a hair clip, a charm or more! Following the Drag Academy’s exploration of dress, art and drag, participants will be given a variety of craft materials, fabrics and everyday objects to make a wearable item that borders the line between art and self-expressive accessory.
