Join MOCA Toronto at the Paradise Theatre for an intimate conversation between acclaimed artists Liz Magor and Jessica Stockholder. Connected by sculpture and their experiences as art educators, the pair will explore the complexities and current state of the medium while reflecting on artist Phyllida Barlow’s (1944-2023) contributions to sculpture and art-making.
Magor and Barlow are both exhibiting artists this fall at MOCA — their respective solo exhibitions will run from September 7, 2023 to February 4, 2024.
This conversation will take place offsite at Paradise Theatre, located at 1006c Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M6H 1M2. Doors will open at 12:15 pm. Food and beverage will be available for purchase onsite.

About the Artists
Liz Magor is one of Canada’s most prominent artists. She studied at the Vancouver School of Art and at Parsons School of Design in New York City. In addition to exhibiting extensively throughout Canada and Europe, she has taught at both the Ontario College of Art and Design University and at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, influencing the work of younger generations of artists.
Magor’s work has been widely recognized. In 2021, France awarded Magor the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2015, she was the recipient of the Gershon Iskowitz Prize, in 2009 she was awarded The Audain Prize, and in 2001, she was recipient of the Governor General’s Award in Canada. In 1987, Magor exhibited at documenta 8 in Kassel, Germany, and in 1984, she represented Canada at the Venice Biennale.
Magor has presented several notable solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Douglas Hyde Gallery (Dublin, Ireland), The Modern and Contemporary Art Museum (Nice, France), Kunstverein (Hamburg, Germany), and the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Zurich, Switzerland). Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions at the Musée d’art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (France), Kunsthalle Basel (Switzerland), Glasgow Sculpture Studios (Scotland), National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands), and the Museum of Modern Art (New York). She lives and works in Vancouver.
Jessica Stockholder is an internationally acclaimed visual artist and educator. In addition to earning her BFA from the University of Victoria, Canada and her MFA from Yale University, she was awarded two honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees: one from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2010, and one from Columbia College in 2013. Stockholder was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2018.
Stockholder’s work sits at the intersection of painting with sculpture and often incorporates the architecture in which it has been conceived. Stockholder’s work has been exhibited in many of the world’s most influential art venues, including Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Dia Center for the Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Venice Biennale. Her work can also be found in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Whitney Museum of American Art, LACMA, and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Stockholder lives and works in Chicago, where she is the Raymond W. & Martha Hilpert Gruner Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago, a position she accepted in 2011 after 12 years as Director of the Sculpture Department at the Yale School of Art.
