MOCA and the Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) are collaborating to present a series of programmes on select MOCA Free Friday Nights powered by Scotiabank in conjunction with MOCA’s Bar Takeovers. These programmes will feature a variety of artists working in various media and work to animate MOCA’s installation, untitled 2013 (thomas demand’s here), by Rirkrit Tiravanija on the Ground Floor.
These programmes takes place on the following Free Friday Nights:
- October 28 with Mallika Gujral (Kween Mallika)
- November 18 with Sabbie Narwal
- December 16 with Kwasi Obeng-Adjei
Mallika Gujral (Kween Mallika) on October 28, 6:00–9:00 pm
Kween Mallika will host a Bollywood-style Drag Karaoke night on MOCA’s Ground Floor. Her high-energy performances aim to foster an inclusive nature to animate the bar, encourage audience participation and highlight the exhibit’s themes of queerness, night life, and Japanese karaoke.
Biography
Kween Mallika, the Bollywood Queen of Toronto, hails from New Delhi, India. Trained as a classical dancer, she brings an authentic Indian experience to the stage. Kween Mallika’s drag shows are an experience that brings together performance and identity, immersifying the audience.
Sabbie Narwal on November 18, 6:00–9:00 pm
Sabbie Narwal is developing an illustration in conjunction with MOCA Toronto and Dean Baldwin Lew’s new publication Mixed Drinks. Featured in this publication are recipe submission from 50+ artists. The illustration will focus on Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Negroni submission and will be on display during MOCA Free Friday Nights Bar Takeover. The visual will be available as a postcard and feature the cocktail ingredients alongside its recipe directions. Mixed Drinks will also be available for purchase.
Biography
Sabbie Narwal is a Brampton-based artist and designer. She’s also the creator of The Paper Narwhal, an illustration and art goods brand on a mission to provide people with whimsical, warm and comforting art in accessible forms. As a South Asian woman, her practice is also heavily influenced by her culture and gender. She aims to make the world a cozier place with each illustration she creates.
Kwasi Obeng-Adjei on December 16, 6:00–9:00 pm
Kwasi Obeng-Adjei and team will perform a choreographed interactive dance piece throughout the evening. His high energy dance style will connect to the nightlife themes of the exhibit and will engage and entertain the audiences as they move through the space.
Biography
Kwasi Obeng-Adjei is a Canadian dancer, choreographer, and instructor born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area. Kwasi is trained in various styles that include ballet, jazz, hip hop, and modern and traditional African dance. Kwasi’s professional credits include the Pan-American Games, Lua Shayenne Dance Company’s Kira, The Path | La Voie, Esie Mensah Creations, the Raptors half-time show, and more.
