Friday Night Performance Series: Germaine Liu and Mark Zurawinski

Friday, October 20, 2023
 | 7:00 pm
 – 8:00 pm
 | Free

In the second performance in our Friday Night Performance Series, join artists Germaine Liu and Mark Zurawinski as they create a musical arrangement inspired by Liz Magor’s exhibition The Separation

Using everyday found objects, Readymades, electronics, and percussive instruments, the performance will explore acoustic sounds and sonic potentials, asking the audience to consider how music might be received through seeing, touching, and movement.

About the Artists

Germaine Liu is a Hong Kong born, Cantonese-Chinese-Canadian artist that plays and works in multi-modalities. She is a scenario-maker, composer, percussionist, improvisor, sound artist, and found object explorer. She composes multidisciplinary works and often performs in them, inviting players of various abilities, training, and disciplines to come together. She is interested in exploring and sharing in collaborative settings, making joyful spaces that invite participants to be together. Notable commissions include We Made This With Love, commissioned by The Music Gallery, And With, commissioned by The Bentway, and Still Life, commissioned by The Music Gallery. She is an Associate Artist with Public Recordings.

Mark Zurawinski is a Toronto-based audio engineer, sound designer, percussionist, and improviser. Inspired by the tangibility of sound, the fluidity of texture and time, and the space where composition and improvisation meet, Mark’s work investigates the inner worlds of sounding objects through the play of field recordings, found percussion, electro-acoustic processing, and digital synthesis. Mark has created for film, dance, theatre, installations, and multimedia projects through collaborations with The Bentway Toronto, MOCA Toronto, Understory, UnDrum Festival, Mocean Dance Halifax, Pro Arte De Danza, junctQín Keyboard Collective, Canadian Creative Music Network, and partner Germaine Liu.
