Join us on Tuesday, July 8 for the first session of Life Drawing in the Museum – a three session course series set within MOCA’s exhibition space with guided instruction and a live nude model. This introductory session will take you through the basics of figure drawing with exercises focusing on shorter poses that hone in on the skills and understanding of line work, movement, and proportions.
Build up your skills over three weeks, with sessions that begin with quick gestural warm-ups and progress to longer poses with drapery and props. Prefer less commitment? Register for a single session to try something new or deepen your existing practice. All skill levels are welcome!
This series of workshops is inspired by the surreal paintings of Margaux Williamson, and takes place on Floor 3, where her solo exhibition Shoes, books, hands, buildings, and cars is currently on view. Her paintings omit the human body, but feature spaces that give you the feeling a person was just there moments ago.
This workshop series is offered with the support of our friends at The Canadian Contemporary School of Art.
Register for one session or all three — it’s up to you!

FAQ
I’ve never attended a life drawing workshop before, what can I expect?
Drawing from life is an essential skill for visual artists. You can expect short tutorials on topics such as line of action, the landmarks of the human body and observational techniques. The model will be nude and taking on various poses ranging from short 30 second poses to longer extended poses.
Are materials provided?
Paper, easels, drawing horses and drawing surfaces will be provided. Drawing kits will be available for purchase. You may bring your own dry art mediums including pencils, pastels and charcoal, but please do not bring paint.
What comes in the drawing kit?
For $10, you’ll receive soft drawing pencils, willow charcoal, an eraser and a kneaded eraser, and a paper viewfinder. Cash or card are accepted.
Can I take photos?
No. All photography is prohibited while life drawing is in session. After the workshop is over at 9pm and the model is clothed, you may take photos of your own work or the museum. No flash photography is permitted.
