Join us for Art Hive at MOCA, the second edition of our drop-in art programme that invites the whole community to stop by and create! This free programme runs bi-weekly on Monday evenings from 5–8 pm.
On April 28, make a hanging sculpture inspired by exhibiting artist Jessica Stockholder In her installation The Squared Circle: Ringing, Stockholder uses the museum as her canvas and physical objects as paint, showing us how colour and material can powerfully transform a space into an immersive experience that resists easy categorization. You’ll get to create your own “paintings in space” using shifting perspectives and sparking new ways to reflect on our most familiar subject: ourselves!
Explore a range of materials and techniques guided by visiting art therapy students who will facilitate creative expression. Start fresh, or bring your works-in-progress to find inspiration and connect with your community. All skill levels are welcome, from beginners to professionals.
As part of our mission to be ambitiously inclusive, this programme is free to all and materials will be provided. Floor 1 will also be open free-of-charge to all participants to explore Jessica Stockholder’s vibrant installation.
This programme is intended for adults, seniors and teens. We recommend families with young children stop by for our TD Community Sundays for kid-friendly activities each month.
Please note: Art Hive takes place on Mondays, outside of MOCA’s regular hours. Though Floors 2 and 3 of the museum will be closed, Floor 1 will remain open to participants. Seating is limited and is on a first-come first-serve basis. Stop by and explore your creative side.
What is an Art Hive?
Art Hives provide free, community art-making spaces open to everyone, aiming to foster a welcoming environment for all participants. You don’t need to have any experience making art to join.
This programme draws from the research and practice of Dr. Janis Timm-Bottos, a professor at Concordia University. Learn more about Art Hives here.
About the Facilitators
Each session will be led by graduate students at the Toronto Art Therapy Institute who will facilitate a supportive space for self-expression and creativity. These students will be supported by the MOCA Learning team.
