TD Community Sunday: Stitching Alternative Futures with Justine Woods

Sunday, November 6, 2022
 | 12:00 pm
 – 4:00 pm
 | Free
In-person | All ages

Join garment artist, designer, and educator Justine Woods for a miniature garment-making workshop. During this session, participants will be introduced to garment-making as a liberatory tool for alternative world-building. This workshop welcomes participants of all ages/skill levels and will take place on the ground floor of MOCA behind Rirkrit Tiravanija’s work untitled 2013 (thomas demand’s here), 2022.

Prompted by the making of quarter-scale garment-based creations using repurposed textiles and cloth, participants will have the opportunity to engage in critical conversations, thinking, and reflections related to reimagining our relationship to clothing beyond the Eurocentric perspective; garment-making as a resurgent practice toward relational and anti-colonial futures; and mobilizing liberation through the act of collective making. The exploration of garment design as models can be read in conversation with Thomas Demand’s photographs of Azzedine Alaïa’s paper garment patterns featured in HOUSE OF CARD.

No previous sewing experience is needed to participate. Participants are encouraged to bring a discarded item of clothing of their own to repurpose and upcycle for the workshop.
