Join MOCA for a fascinating presentation by Sarah Parsons, Professor of Art History and Visual Culture at York University, whose research and teaching focuses on the history of photography in North America.
The talk, Constructing Images: Jeff Wall and the Transformation of Photography in the 1980s examine’s Wall’s early works within a period of radical change for photography, as the medium gained widespread recognition as fine art in the contemporary art scene. Focusing on Wall’s early career in photography, Parsons will explore the development of his artistic process and practice as well as his relationship with other influential figures of the 1980s.

About the Artist
Sarah Parsons is Professor of Art History and Visual Culture in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design at York University in Toronto. Her research and teaching focus on the history and theory of photography, primarily in Anglo-American contexts. She is the author of William Notman: Life and Work (2014), co-author with Sarah Bassnett of Photography in Canada, 1839 – 1989 (2023), and editor of Photography After Photography: Gender, Genre, and History (2017). Her most recent project examines how early photography shaped ideas about privacy in North America and has been supported by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Parsons also serves as Lead Editor of the journal Photography and Culture.
