Join MOCA for the May iteration of our Monthly Reading Sessions, developed in partnership with Groundwood Books. During this programme, author Jon-Erik Lappano will read his most recent picture book Martin and the River, illustrated by Josée Bisaillon. Following the reading, participants will be asked if there is a natural space that means something to them. Their answer will be used as inspiration for the arts-based activity that follows. The reading will take place within Jeffrey Gibson’s exhibition I AM YOUR RELATIVE. Gibson’s installation also includes a small collection of children’s books sourced from Groundwood Books and Another Story Bookshop. The collection prioritizes Indigenous, Black, Brown and queer voices. Martin and the River will be available onsite for purchase. Participants will also have the opportunity to have their book signed by Lappano.

Jon-Erik Lappano’s debut picture book, Tokyo Digs a Garden, illustrated by Kellen Hatanaka, won the Governor General’s Literary Award and was a finalist for the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award, the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award and Japan’s Sakura Medal. He has also written Maggie’s Treasure, illustrated by Kellen Hatanaka, to wide acclaim, and Song for the Snow, illustrated by Byron Eggenschwiler. Jon-Erik lives in Stratford, Ontario, with his family.

Groundwood Books is known for award-winning books that reflect the experiences of children both in Canada and around the world. Inspired by the belief that children’s books can be important and necessary without sacrificing warmth, beauty, playfulness and humour, Groundwood’s list is characterized by its emphasis on fiction and non-fiction about and for children whose stories might not otherwise be told.
