An Evening with Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas

Thursday, November 14, 2024
 | 6:30 pm
 – 9:00 pm
 | Pay what you wish (minimum $10)

Join MOCA for a special evening with influential and visionary artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas.

The event will feature an opening performance honouring Yahgulanaas’ contributions to the all-ages opera and book, The Flight of the Hummingbird: A Parable for the Environment, co-produced by the Vancouver Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria. This environmental fable about moral courage urges us all to do what we can for our planet.

Following the performance, Yahgulanaas will lead an in depth exploration of his exhibition, Diaries After a Flood, now on view on the Ground Floor of the museum.

Celebrated for his graphic novels, the evening will also be an opportunity for book-signing and raising a glass to Yahgulanaas’ diverse practice and this momentous exhibition.

Diaries After a Flood includes a newly commissioned large-scale installation, Daalkaatlii Diaries, alongside Yahgulanaas’ well-known multi-panel work, RED, a defining example of his pioneering Haida-manga style. The exhibition invites viewers to explore new ways of reading and experiencing Yahgulanaas’ storytelling, while raising timely and necessary questions about culture, identity, and histories—both past and present.

Tickets for this event begin at $10 with a sliding “pay what you wish” scale. We encourage those who can, to support MOCA and its efforts in bringing influential and visionary artists like Yahgulanaas to Toronto to offer unique and invaluable perspectives and experiences.
