Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development, is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, directing and managing the execution of a comprehensive, effective annual development programme for the Museum consistent with MOCA’s mission. The Director of Development serves as an essential member of the senior management team. The incumbent oversees private-sector donations and major gifts (corporate, individual, benefactor and foundation gifts); manages annual giving including membership, special event fundraising activities and donor stewardship programmes to expand the Museum’s network of supporters. The position works closely with and provides professional support to the Fundraising Committee members and, when required, the Board of Directors.

The Director of Development will be responsible for leading the divisional team, developing strategies, and implementing flexible plans that deepen relationships in all segments of the philanthropic community.



Annual Fundraising

  • Advise the Executive Director on strategies to increase MOCA’s regional and national networking capabilities to advance MOCA’s fundraising campaign and donor engagement.
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, plan, establish and maintain forecasts of annual goals for individuals, foundations, corporations and earned income forecasts from fundraising events.
  • Develop a comprehensive corporate donor and sponsorship program.
  • Monitor and present regular fundraising reports to the Executive Director, the Fundraising Committee and the Board as required. Mobilizes resources to advance fundraising campaign activities.
  • Serve as liaison with the Fundraising Committee.
  • Working with the Executive Director, and in consultation with other divisions, define, develop and prioritize short- and long-term annual fundraising strategies and goals, including the expansion of sustainable funding and long-term programmatic support.
  • Actively cooperate with senior staff to identify new prospects and strategies for soliciting funds. Develop and present overall programs for these fundraising activities to the Executive Director for review and active support for execution.
  • Day-to-day tasks include producing, reviewing and editing grants, funding proposals and other donor communications; participation in fundraising committee meetings; and coordinating divisional activities, including overseeing various annual giving campaigns.
  • Oversee the sourcing and procurement of government grants by working closely with the Government Relations/Grants Writer and provide support with writing and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency receipting regulations and ensure that required documentation is maintained and that records are reconciled with the Finance Division.
  • Embrace collaboration with the relative Museum departments to ensure integration of development strategies.
  • ​​Oversees the planning and implementation of membership acquisition/retention campaigns; writing of persuasive direct mail and other collateral materials; designing the promotional campaigns or special events to attract member prospects and retain current members; coordinating the cultivation, solicitation and recognition process for assigned supporters and identifying opportunities for graduating members to higher membership levels.


Leadership and Staff Management

  • Provide leadership, training and support to development staff to implement established goals and objectives. Communicate, guide, and direct all those involved to realize the Museum’s strategic and operational goals fully.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of employees engaged in maintaining Donor Perfect and records of contributors to the Museum.
  • Participate in the development of general policy, procedures, strategic planning, budgeting and staffing decisions.


Capital Campaign (if required)

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and outside counsel to drive strategic campaign plans that adhere to the Museum’s long-term capitalization and short-term operational fundraising goals.
  • Implement fundraising strategies for the capital campaign working closely with the campaign staff and the Campaign Cabinet.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, the Campaign Cabinet and the Board with the direction and execution of key donor relationships and solicitation strategies.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.



  • A bachelor’s degree is required, with a master’s degree preferred. Preference will be given to those with a Certified Fundraising Executive designation (CFRE) and five to seven years of experience in fundraising for a major non-profit organization, preferably for an arts organization.
  • Knowledge of principles and best practices in fundraising and philanthropy. Experience working with non-profit boards, committees, donors and volunteers. Experience developing and implementing fundraising campaigns, including annual giving, membership and capital campaign, and fundraising processes such as direct mail, donor cultivation, donor recognition and special event fundraising.
  • Excellent knowledge of and strong connections to the local fundraising community bringing key contacts with individual donors, corporate sponsorship and partnerships, government and foundations to MOCA.
  • Experience in and knowledge of the visual arts, art galleries, museums or related educational institutions is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent administrative and management skills, including a track record of managing several individuals performing diverse tasks; strong computer skills, including Google Workplace, MacOS platform, Asana, Fundraising CRM, and advanced donor research.
  • A strong collaborative spirit with an open mind and an understanding that success depends upon open and honest teamwork with excellent communication skills, including public speaking, proposal writing and professional presentation skills.
